HOW I LEARNED THIS
You see, many clients tell me they struggle to figure out how to market the show to the right audience to attract more of the right listeners.
This is what I’ve been doing for 3 decades.
I got into radio in 1988 while I was earning my bachelors degree in architecture.
Being an introvert, impostor syndrome was always a challenge. Over time, I learned how to attract and entertain an audience.
Over the next 30 years, I created marketing campaigns and events to build a buying audience. I also spent decades coaching and training on-air talent to do the same.
Now I do that for podcasters.
Through my years in radio, I was lucky enough to interview greats like George Strait, Ice-T, Zac Brown, Lady Gaga and more. These interviews gave me status by association.
In 2009, I fell in love with podcasting and the creative, entrepreneurial spirit of it. What radio was lacking by becoming big business, podcasts were capitalizing on with adventure and powerful niches.
Unfortuately, I heard so many podcasts with no strategy. I figured if they could learn just a few of the things we used in radio to attract an audience and convert them to customers, their podcasts could be so much stronger and more effective.
But in 2012, I didn’t have a platform of my own. I saw all these other experts growing and having an impact. How could they do it and I’m not? I had all this radio experience.
STEP UP
Then I realized I just needed to step up. Owning a radio station was no longer possible due to big business. But, now there was an option with my own podcast. That’s when I got started coaching podcasters.
The more conversations I had, the more podcasters would tell me they just needed a solid plan and foundation for growth. How do we get more listeners?
Now, you now have the opportunity to use podcasting to attract your ideal coaching clients. I got lucky to get it and figure it out by getting knocked around. Now you can easily get it without all the pain I experienced.
Imagine being able to have a conversation with your ideal customer every week. That’s what podcasting can do for you if you structure it right.
It’s the perfect way to reach your target audience and demonstrate your authority in your niche. You simply need a strategy to connect your content to your ideal client.
3 SECRETS
Are you leveraging podcasting to its full potential to grow your business?
Now is the time. Podcasting is growing. It is wide open compared to blogging and YouTube. And, it is growing incredibly fast.
The future is bright.
When I teach podcasters how to do this, there are three common challenges.
They make it too complicated. They have a poor stragegy. And, they don’t know where to start.
You can overcome each of these easily. But before I share the solutions to those challenges, let me give you three secrets the podcast gurus don’t tell you.
First, you podcast allows you to build know, like and trust.
The gurus want you to get a sponsor or sell ads. That’s the worst thing you can do.
It takes too much time and effort to sell ads. You have limited inventory. And, there is a revenue ceiliing.
Instead, build relationships with the stories you tell and examples you share on your podcast. Allow your listener to get to know you. Build rapport with your potential clients.
Next, use your content to create excitement for what you have to offer.
The best interview to launch a product or service features someone who has been helped by using the product or service. Get that person to tell their story of transformation.
Finally, remember that different people consume content in different ways. One size does not fit all. Therefore, give them options.
For instance, record a video and use the audio for your podcast. Two formats, but you’ve only done the work once. Repurpose your content.
3 CHALLENGES
Let’s solve the three challenges for you.
First, coaches make podcasting too complicated. You simply need to connect your content to your coaching clients.
Clients tell me they struggle creating a strong call-to-action and getting listeners to sign up for a call.
Develop a strategy to attract an audience of potential clients. Then, create great content that will build trust. Let your content lead to your offer vehicle, such as webinar or discovery call.
My radio coach taught me the importance of building relationships. He would tell me that friendships come from self revelation. When you reveal things about yourself, you build that friendship.
On your podcast, build relationships with your amazing content. This is the power of podcasting.
STRATEGY
The next challenge podcasters encounter is a poor strategy.
Clients tell me they struggle to connect the podcast to the business and figure out how it fits into the overall marketing plan.
My podcast profits framework involves six steps. It doesn’t need to be any harder than this.
STEP 1
Step 1 is your podcast platform. This is defining your ideal listeners and your why.
TaVona came to me to launch her podcast. We built a show to help you attract nurses who she could help transition from nursing to entrepreneurial endeavors.
Over time, she realized her coaching clients needed her help launching their next product or service instead of a business. So, she pivoted.
This pivot wouldn’t have been possible without understanding her ideal client and knowing her true why.
STEP 2
Step 2 is your popularity factor. This is how you attract your ideal clients.
Greg runs the Cool Grandpa podcast. When he came to me for help, he had about 400 downloads a month.
After we created his strategy, his downloads increased from 400 to 850. That’s what is possible with a strategy.
STEP 3
Step 3 is your content creation. This is where we create magnetic content.
Sadie and Sausha came to me to launch their podcast called Meathead Test Kitchen.
These two are amazing. They talk about health and fitness in their very own unique way. You know exactly what you get on this show within the first two minutes.
Their content makes them unique and magnetic.
STEP 4
Step 4 is your Relationship Roadmap. This is where you build relationships.
Zoe uses her podcast to build relationships with decision makers at potential client companies. Over time, she is able to reach a point where these CEOs are willing to discuss a working relationship all because of her podcast.
This is just one of the many ways to build relationships with your show.
STEP 5
Step 5 is your Starting Strategy. This is all about offering lead magnets and webinar invitations. It could also be a discovery call with your potential client.
This is what I do with Podcast Talent Coach. I give you plenty of information you can use. I then give you amazing opportunities to get more through my webinars and other trainings.
STEP 6
Finally, step 6 is Converting Clients. This is where you present your offer.
When Oscar and I worked together, he was conducting great interviews on his podcast. Unfortunately, the show wasn’t leading to clients.
When I listened to his show, he did very little to invite potential clients to work with him. We revamped the structure of the show a bit.
Now, Oscar is a bigger part of the show. He invites his listeners to get more information about working with him. Those interactions now turn into client relationships.
START
The third challenge coaches face is they don’t know where to start.
Clients tell me they struggle with how to offer things without making it sound like an ad. They tell me it is hard to make yourself likable while selling something.
What would it mean if you had an easy way to grow your audience? A step-by-step process to turn your listeners into coaching clients?
There is a secret to growing an audience. You need to work on 2 sides of the equation.
You need to attract new listeners. Then, you need to keep your current listeners coming back for more.
Talk to your idea coaching clients each and every week on your podcast to build those powerful, profitable relationships.
Follow those 6 steps I’ve given you to land your clients.
