SUMMARY

In this episode, Erik shares the story behind the show’s transformation and what it truly means to build authority. Building it not just with content, but with context, magnetic personality, and storytelling.

Erik’s broadcasting journey started by accident, but his passion for creativity, connection, and helping others flourish has fueled decades of radio and podcasting success.

Why settle for blending in? Erik explains why ads and sponsors create a ceiling and clutter, and how you can instead become a “category of one.”

He emphasizes that listeners come for your content, but stay for your context. This includes your unique stories, perspectives, and personality.

Consistency is great, but intentional leadership is what turns your podcast into an authority engine.

Key authority insights from Erik:

– It’s not about content—it’s about context.

Your voice wrapped in story creates memorable experiences that build trust and lasting relationships.

– People buy your journey, not your six steps.

Magnetic personalities make others believe and inspire action by sharing real stories and authentic experiences.

– Authority isn’t achieved by showing up; it’s built on leadership and entertainment.

Listeners want to be entertained and moved, not lectured.

– Three challenges for podcasters:

1. Overcomplicating the process: Focus on context, not just content.

2. Lacking a strategy to turn listeners into clients: Erik promises interviews and systems to help you succeed.

3. Having no mentor or clear path: This podcast is your guide, with industry leaders ready to share their secrets.

TRANSCRIPT

It’s a new day. After 550 episodes of Podcast Talent Coach, we are transforming the show to help you become that magnetic personality you are meant to be.

Are you ready to turn your podcast into an authority engine and not just more content?

Welcome to Influential Voices of Authority, the podcast for coaches, consultants, and experts who are ready to stop being the best-kept secret in their niche and become the sought-after authority.

I’m your host, Erik K. Johnson, Podcast Talent Coach and media veteran. In each episode, I sit down with industry leaders and visibility experts to uncover how they use their voice, their message, and their platform to build trust, grow their audience, and attract premium clients.

If you’re ready to turn your voice into your greatest asset, you’re in the right place. Welcome to Influential Voices of Authority.

This podcast was launched in 2013 to help podcasters create better content. Over those 550 episodes, we’ve talked about different ways to improve your process.

We talked a lot about growing your audience and driving your business. But, we’ve also spent many episodes discussing better storytelling and interviews. We helped you overcome your impostor syndrome. And we had conversations about finding mentors.

THE AUTHORITY TRANSFORMATION

Now it’s time to help you put this all into action and start to stand out in your niche. I want you to become the magnetic force in your industry that doesn’t just attract clients, but becomes a category of one that has no comparison.

There are many gurus who can help you launch a podcast. Many want to help you sell ads for your show.

I want to help you develop your magnetic personality, so you can use your podcast to build your authority and attract people to you and your business and not the business of advertisers. Let’s keep the revenue in house.

I’m focused on your art of podcasting with personality. I help coaches attract their ideal clients by using their podcast to build powerful, profitable relationships.

MY STORY

I actually fell into radio by accident while getting my degree in architecture.

I love to create within a structure. That’s what I did in architecture. That’s what I’ve done in radio since 1989 and that’s what I do in podcasting and business.

Take a framework, create something unique that can’t be copied, gain attention and leverage that attention to grow business.

The problem I had when I started was my introverted nature. I never wanted to be on stage in front of people. In fact, I hated presenting in architecture school and I didn’t want to be on stage in radio.

I had a powerful message to share, but impostor syndrome held me back.

Over the years, I learned to conquer the little voice in my head and shine in front of a crowd with my message. My relationships grew and my success skyrocked. My show and stations were consistently at the top of the ratings.

I love teaching and coaching. I love helping others discover new things.

Unfortunately, radio no longer allowed me to do that. Big business had taken over and sucked the creativity out. It was color by numbers. We were no longer able to be unique and a category of one.

THE NEW FRONTIER

Then one day I discovered podcasting. The new frontier.

Podcasting brought back the creativity and connection. Relationships were growing and people were having fun.

Unfortunately, they were making a lot of mistakes that didn’t even recognize. Most podcasters believe their show is about their context. You gain and keep listeners by making your show about your context. It’s the way you wrap your content that connects with people.

So, I founded Podcast Talent Coach to help these podcasters become someone worth listening to. My show Podcast Talent Coach podcast has 550 episodes published helping people build the foundation.

YOU AS A MAGNETIC PERSONALITY

I have been running successful radio stations and coaching talent atop the radio ratings since 1995 and now have been coaching successful podcast hosts since 2013.

I help coaches attract their ideal clients using their podcast and personality.

Now it’s time to take this show and help you become that influential authority in your niche.

So, why do you need to become a magnetic personality?

Well, anybody can copy your information. They cannot copy you.

Your personality and context make you entertaining. People who are entertaining get attention. People with attention make money.

Magnetic personalities don’t talk about their 6-step process. Magnetic personalities talk about their journey and tell stories that make others believe.

We all know people do business with those they know, like and trust. There is no better way to create that know you than by sharing your story through the spoken word.

Through story, your personality will shine through and help you build those powerful, profitable relationships.

THE CHALLENGES

There are three challenges people face.

First, they make the process harder than it needs to be.

You don’t need to create more content. And, you need to wrap your content in better context. You need to teach the same thing through different stories.

People don’t want to learn. They want to be entertained. That’s why we’ve learned through parables since the dawn of time. They are enjoyable, memorable, and powerful.

The second challenge most podcasters face is their poor strategy to convert listeners to clients.

When your podcast ends, how do you continue the conversation with your listeners. How do you convert listeners and guests into clients?

You need a system and strategy that works.

And the final challege podcasters face is they have no mentor to show them the way and don’t know where to start.

That’s the purpose of this podcast. I’m here to show you how various experts build their authority and grow their influence using their podcast and platforms.

THE FUTURE OF AUTHORITY

I’ll bring you a variety of niches and industries. We’ll talk to people who have overcome the Impostor Syndrome and achieved great things. Ultimately, we’ll show you how you can become the sought-after authority in your niche as well.

Thanks for coming along for the ride.

If you know another entrepreneur struggling to be seen and recognized for their expertise, please share this podcast with them. Let’s help other grow their business as well.

LET’S AUDIT YOUR PODCAST FOR AUTHORITY

You’ve published the episodes. You’ve stayed consistent. You know your content is good.

And yet…

  • You’re not being seen as the authority in your niche
  • Your podcast isn’t creating the level of influence or opportunity you expected
  • People listen—but they don’t take action
  • And you sound professional… but not unforgettable

The truth?

Consistency alone doesn’t create authority. Intentional leadership does.
